Reading Quest provides three magical two-week-long structured literacy camps for students in Santa Fe Public Schools (SFPS) and Turquoise Trail Charter School in partnership with  Santa Fe School for the Arts & Sciences. We are extremely grateful to Santa Fe School for the Arts & Sciences for hosting our camps at their amazing school and beautiful campus for the past 13 years and supporting our programs in countless ways!

 2020 Reading is Wild Summer Camp

200 Reading Quest students attended our month long Reading is Wild summer program online during the pandemic, during which students learned about wild animals alongside customized phonics instruction. Our teen staff delivered 800 bags of books, art supplies and prizes to our students as they progressed from Animal Friend to Animal Whisperer to Animal Caretaker and finally, Animal Expert.

14 Reading Quest students attended our Reader's Theater Summer Camp during the pandemic. The students helped create a play and performed it online.

The Reading is Magic Summer Camps are a collaboration between Reading Quest, ​Santa Fe School for the Arts & Sciences (SFSAS) and Santa Fe Public Schools and Turquoise Trail Charter School.  

Each session includes a deep dive into the world of the Middle Ages, including a wide range of art and literacy activities, physical activities such as archery and chair jousting, and an original Reader's Theater movie.The learning centers and reading materials provide opportunities to engage in a variety of learning modalities so that every child is reached and supported.

Each student works their way through the levels of the ‘Royal Road’ and earns points by demonstrating perseverance and kindness via the student created 'Royal Code', to eventually become a knight, a princess, or a prince.
Every day the students learn new phonics rules and reading strategies as they gain confidence in reading, using song and American Sign Language. They read aloud to teachers, play phonics-based active games and board games, such as Reading Baseball, Around the World, Word Jousting, Knights & Castles, Vocabulary Twister, Reading Jenga, and the Nitro Reading Road Race Game. 

​Over the past 13 summers, students have made, on average, slightly more than one year's growth in reading during each two week summer camp. We would be happy to share our 2019 evaluations with you upon request.
